Across the world and through thousands of years of history, as the shortest day of the year draws near, cultures have thumbed their nose at the seasonal darkness and chill with celebrations of fire and light.
2010's Fire Water festival will be a dramatic mid-winter spectacle of flame and illumination of the early years of colonial settlement, evoking fire's double edged nature as comfort and warmth but also danger, from those sheltering around unknown fires on the far side of the harbour and the balls of fire from the soldiers' gaskets.
